Australia has formally recognised Palestine as a sovereign and independent state, becoming one of over 150 nations to do so.

Prime Minister Albanese announced the formal recognition at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, to coincide with similar declarations made by the UK and Canada.

Many have welcomed the move as historic, but say it must be matched with stronger action – an end to Australia’s military cooperation and two-way arms trade with Israel.
