Australia may be facing a doctor shortage but not because of a lack of interest to study medicine. The future of one hundred and eighty international medical students is in question after states were unable to reach an agreement about placement shortages. The Commonwealth has found funding for 100 of the places but wants the states and territories to come up with the rest of the money.
Although recent years have seen an increase for medical places at universities there might not be enough placements available for graduating students. Australian Medical Association Federal President Dr Steve Hambleton believes that this is an area that needs to be addressed by both the Federal and state governments.
