Produced by Rebekah Ison

The first arrival of Asylum seekers on Nauru might have been the government's focus on Friday September 14 but the day before it was the plight of Syrian refugees. Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen and Foreign Minister Bob Carr joined forces to announce one thousand places of Australia's refugee intake would be dedicated to people escaping violence in Syria.

The government increased its refugee intake from thirteen thousand seven hundred and fifty to twenty thousand in August. (Image by Gari Sullivan)
