The Attorney-General has declared the government will protect the privacy of Australians under proposed reforms to National Security Legislation. Nicola Roxon has spoken about the need for reforms to keep pace with the challenges of crime in an online environment.
The most controversial element of the reforms is the Data Retention plan, which would see telephone and internet providers storing detailed data on their customers for up to two years.
