Indigenous adults are 13 times more likely to be imprisoned than non Indigenous people, while Indigenous youths are 28 times more likely to be placed in juvenille detention compared to non-Indigenous Australians.
As incarceration rates for Indigenous Australians continue to rise, experts are beginning to call for an alternative solution to the problem. They believe Government funding should be directed to preventative programs, rather than increasing jail capacity to house exisiting offenders.
