The defeat of the governments complex and expensive Emissions Trading Scheme is today being celebrated by a bizarre mix of climate change deniers, farmers and committed greenies. Greens spokesperson on climate change Christine Milne says the Greens have nothing in common with the others and their hope is that now they can have more constructive discussions with government. She says Copenahgen wil, change attitudes considerably. Story also features Ian Dunlop, former senior executive of Royal Dutch Shell and former chair of the Australian Coal Association. He is now an independent commentator on climate and energy issues. He’s also hopeful that the death of the ETS legislation in its current form can only lead to better solutions.

After much criticism about the delay, US President Barack Obama has finally announced his new plan for dealing with the war in Afghanistan. The plan is to going in intensively and then pull out quickly – a commitment of 30,000 new American troops on the ground, which will commence withdrawal in July 2011. Obama’s plan is to help the Afghan National Security Forces take back control of the country themselves – but will it work?
