Months after Victoria was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires, Victorian Premier JOHN BRUMBY today announced an overhaul of the national bushfire warning system. From today, all states and territories will adopt a new fire warning category, CODE RED, or 'CATASTROPHIC'. This early warning category urges people to leave their homes as early as possible rather than stay to fight the fire. But is this enough to prevent a repeat of February's devastating fires? Keating and Howard were two prime ministers who certainly made their mark on Australian politics, but in very different ways. Political journalist Paul Kelly though sees them as powerfully similar, particularly in their ability to engender patriotism and to lead Australia into the modern world. In 1975, five Australian journalists were killed by Indonesian forces to cover up their invasion of East Timor. These journalists are now referred to as the "Balibo Five." The recent film Balibo, based on a book by Jill Jolliffe has rekindled interest in the story and the Australian Federal Police announced yesterday that they have launched a new investigation. Travelling in foreign countries is one of the things that often inspire artists. It happened to Brita Miklouho-Maklai as well, when she went to Germany. Brita spent some time in Berlin which she calls Europe’s most vibrating city and started painting and drawing. The results of that journey can be seen in an exhibition called “Berlin Blogs”.
