Get Up have launched a new campaign to support Aboriginal homelands in the Northern Territory. It's an issue The Wire has been covering quite closely and Get Up are currently circulating a petition calling on the Federal Government to increase investment in homelands. A delegation of leaders from homeland communities are meeting the federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs on Tuesday and GetUp hopes the petition will add weight support for increased funding. You might remember the documentary that was shown on the ABC last year called The Oasis. It was filmed at a youth homeless shelter in Sydney over the course of two years. The film followed Captain Paul Moulds who runs the oasis and his daily battles with youth homelessness. After the documentary was broadcast, there was an enormous amount of media coverage around the issue. The Federal Government announced a White Paper shortly after, which was released in December last year. Last Friday on The Wire you heard about amendments to Queensland's abortion laws that were up for debate in parliament. The amendments were passed yesterday and the criminal code now protects doctors who perform medical procedures, including abortion. However, there's still debate as to whether this amendment will actually change anything. Australian Tamils and non Tamils will gather outside the Town Hall Square in Sydney this afternoon from 4pm to raise awareness of the plight all Tamils living in Sri Lanka face. The demonstration follows on from Tuesday's Wire report on the Tamil journalist jailed for 20 years under anti-terrorism laws and the ongoing outcry over the jailing of over 300, 000 Tamils in internment camps. Civil libertarians have once again called on the Queensland Government and Police Commissioner to ban taser use... except for in life or death situations.
