There’s a lot of argument about whether we can afford to cut carbon emissions, with coal companies especially warning the government about what it will mean for the economy and jobs. Ben McNeil is a climate scientist and an economist. In his book The Clean Industrial Revolution he argues that its not a matter of the climate versus the economy – he says the climate IS the economy, and if the coal industry is smart it will get with the program as soon as possible.

Protesters gathered in Adelaide today outside the International Defence and Industry Conference and Trade Exhibition, being hosted by the Department of Defence. The protesters say they are dismayed by the move by South Australia Premier Mike Rann to encourage military arms manufacturers to set up bases in the state. But the organisers of the expo say that understanding our strategies for procuring defence capability is critical. Destruction of natural habitats isn't the only threat to Australia's native animals. Cancer has emerged as a new and very real danger, according to the first ever worldwide study of the impacts of cancer on wildlife. The study done by the Wildlife Conservation Society, says it was cancer in Australia's Tasmanian Devils that first alerted conservationists to the problem.
