At least 14 people have been killed in the latest wave of violence in Sri Lanka, when a Tamil suicide bomber blew himself up just south of the capital Colombo. Thirty one shipping containers full of the explosive ammonium nitrate went missing in the stormy seas off the east coast last night. The containers broke loose from a Hong Kong owned vessel carrying cargo from Newcastle to Brisbane . Assistant National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, Mick Doleman says the incident shows the need to get Australian owned and manned ships back on domestic routes.
The first in a series of National Indigenous Workshops was held in Adelaide today. The workshops will be rolled out across the country, gathering together 100 prominent Indigenous men and women, in equal numbers and from a wide range of ages and communities, to discuss the possibility of putting together a new National Indigenous Representative Body. So how will this body be different to the now defunct ATSIC? Catherine Zengerer put this question to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Tom Calma.
