Yesterday the Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, announced that the Government will increase it’s skilled migrant intake to 108, 500 to solve Australia’s labour shortage. The old policy, which created the controversial Visa 457 was criticized by unions for undercutting the wages of domestic workers, and providing no employment protection for migrant workers. The use of deadly cluster bombs may become illegal as delegates from around the world meet in New Zealand to discuss an international ban. These controversial munitions have recently been used in Lebanon and Iraq, and have sparked harsh criticism. They continue to cause great harm to civilians, as their effects are indiscriminate and there is no guarantee that they will explode on impact. A new report published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health points to basic problems with indigenous housing. Tony Abbott says that indigenous housing is poor quality but, quote, “There’s also no doubt that there’s many indigenous people who don’t respect the housing they have.” The reports authors say this is a common myth, and that their data shows it’s actually faulty equipment and poor maintenance that causes these problems. The Rudd government has highlighted housing as the first step to closing the life expectancy gap between indigenous and non- indigenous Australia. The Sydney Mardi Gras will this year host it’s own significant apology. “100 Revs" is a group of clergy from different Christian faiths who will march in the parade, publicly apologising for not being more loving and accepting of the gay and lesbian community. The announcement of the march came hot on the heels of the Anglican Arch Bishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen, saying he would boycott the annual bishops meeting in Lambeth.. protesting the ordination of gay clergy.
